What is a producer?
A photosynthetic organism that manufactures organic substances using light energy, water and carbon dioxide
What is a consumer?
Organisms that obtain their energy by feeding on (consuming) other organisms. Those that eat producers are PRIMARY CONSUMERS, those that eat primary consumers are SECONDARY CONSUMERS, etc.
What is a trophic level?
The position of an orgnaism on a food chain
Most animals do not rely on a single food source (problem with food chains), but what's wrong with food webs?
Their complexity. Nettles may be eaten by 20 different organisms. It is likely that all organisms within a habitat will be linked to others in the food web. CHarting the inter-relationships of thouseands of species is not feasible. Also, relationships change depending on the timer of year, age and population size of the organisms
