What is an ecosystem?
A more or less self-contained functional unit in ecology made up of all the interacting biotic and abiotic factors in a specific area
What is a population?
A group of individuals of the same species that occupy the same habitat at the same time. Populations of different species form a community
What is a community?
The organisms of all species that live in the same area.
What is a habitat?
The place where an organism normally lives, which is characterised by physical conditions and the species of other organisms present.
What is an ecological niche?
All conditions and resources required for an organism to survive, reproduce and maintain a viable population.
What are the two major process in an ecosystem?
Flow of energy through the system

Cycling of elements within the system
There is exchange between other ecosystems T/F
F
Why are the boundaries of a population difficult to define?
Woodlice on a decaying log could breed with woodlice on a similar log in same ecosystem 1 km away, but in practice not likely - therefore considered separate populations but the boundary is unclear
Where do populations occur?
In different habitats of an ecosystem

e.g. populations of nettles, worms, woodpeckers
Many species can occupy the same niche T/F
