a stand of trees resulting from secondary ecological succession
Tree Plantation
a managed tract of land with uniformly aged tree with one species that are clear cut after 25 years.
Strip cutting
clear cutting a strip of trees along the contour of the land within a corridor narrow enough to allow natural regeneration.
Selective Cutting
intermediate aged or mature trees in a natural forest are selected singly and in small groups
Clear Cutting
Removing all trees from an area, causes erosion, soil runoff, and loss of soil nutrient.
Surface Fires
burn on undergrowth and leaf litter, doesn't kill mature trees, is good because prevents more destructive fires, stimulates germination, keeps diseases under control,
Crown fire

Deforestation

National Forest System

Rangelands
unfenced grasslands in temperate and tropical climates that supply vegetation.
Pastures
managed grasslands or enclosed meadows with domesticated grasses

occurs when too many animals graze for too long and exceed the carrying capacity of a range land area. Causes erosion.
Rotational Grazing
cattle are confined by portable fencing to one area for a short time and then moved.
Conservation easements
deed restrictions that bar future owners of ranches from developing land.
Buffer zone concept
protecting an inner core protected by 2 buffer zones in which people can extract resources sustainably.
Wilderness
undeveloped land.
biodiversity hotspots
areas rich in biodiversity and in danger of extinction
Ecological restoration
the process of repairing damage to ecosystems by restoring, rehabbing, replacing, and creating.
Reconciliation
science that focuses on inventing and establishing new habitats to conserve species diversity in populated areas.
