A moderate socialist and leader of the Russian provisional government (during WWI) from July to October 1917.

Black Hand

Radical Serbian socialist group responsible for the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

Bolsheviks

The radical, revolutionary half of the Russian Social Democratic Party, believed in socialism by revolution. Led into Russian leadership by Vladimir Lenin.

Battle of the Marne 1914

British and French forces mobilized quickly to stop German advancement into neutral Belgium during this WWI battle near the Marne River.

Self-determination

The idea that a nation should be able to determine its own government and political future.

Gavrillo Princip

An eighteen year-old radical Serbian responsible for Archduke Ferdinand's assassination in 1914.

Georges Clenemceau

French representative at the Paris Peace Conference who stressed that Germany must be punished and de-militarized.

War Guilt Clause

Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles (ended WWI), this assigned all guilt of the war to Germany's actions.

Hindenburg

German WWI general, led victory over Russians at Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914. Later became Commander in Chief of German land armies.

Ludendorf

German WWI general, assisted von Hindenburg in battles. Served Hindenburg as Chief of Staff and later as quartermaster general.

Leon Trotsky

Marxist revolutionary and theorist, Soviet politician, and the founder and first leader of the Bolshevik 'Red Army'. Exiled from Communist Party and then Soviet Union in 1929.

No man's land

The land between the trenches in which most WWI deaths occurred.
