Ventilation
Movement of air in and out of the lungs, also known as breathing.
External Respiration
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and circulatory system.
Internal Respiration
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the blood in the circulatory system and the body cells.
Cellular Respiration
The use of oxygen by the cells and the subsequent production of carbon dioxide as the waste gas to be expelled from the body.
Organs of the Upper Respiratory Tract
Nose, Nasal Cavity, Pharynx, and Sinuses.
Organs of the Lower Respiratory Tract
Larynx, Trachea, Bronchi, Lungs, Internal Lung Structures, and Ancillary Structures.
Nasal Conchae
3 Curved, shelf-like bones that project medially from the lateral wall of each nasal cavity; supported by the cancellous bone. (scroll-like appearance)
Paranasal Sinuses
-Maxillae
-Frontal
-Sphenoid
-Ethmoid
Pharynx
Throat; divided into 3 sections,
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngo Pharynx
Larynx
Voice Box; Contains vocal cords, connects the pharynx to the trachea, and functions as part of the air passageway.
Trachea
Windpipe; 20 C-Shaped rings of hyline cartilage.
Epiglottis
Closes over the opening of the larynx to prevent food from entering.
Sellick's Maneuver
Cricoid pressure is performed to reduce the risk of aspiration from a patient undergoing general anesthesia.
3 Cartilages
- Thyroid
- Criciod
- Epiglottic
3 Paired Cartilages
- Arytenoid
- Corniculate
- Cuneiform
Bronchi
Located withing the mediastinal space, it bifurcates into each lung.
Pleural Cavity
The space within the thorax that contains the lungs and pleural membranes.
Lungs
Conical space, spongy, elastic-like tissue;
Right has 3 lobes
Left has 2 lobes
Alveoli
Smallest structures of the lung; here the exchange of gases occures.
Oral Healing
Heals well without suture
Healing in Pharynx
Tissue not needed to be transplanted.
Healing in Trachea
2nd Intention healing along with loose sutures.
Bronchus & Lungs
Tight suture as not to let the air out.
Inhalation & Exhalation
Serous fluid prevents separation, preserves inter pleural pressure, exchange of O2 & CO2. Internal/External Respiration.
Pulmonary Edema
The accumulation of fluid in the extra vascular spaces or alveoli of the lungs.
Pneumothorax
Abnormal accumulation of air between the parietal and visceral pleura causing the affected lung collapse.
Pneumonia
An acute infection of the lung that impairs the exchange of gasses.
COPD
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease; A chronic airway obstruction that occurs secondary to emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis and usually caused by a combination of disorders.
Emphysema
Often occurs in conjunction with COPD; An abnormal, irreversable enlargement of the alveoli due to the destruction of the alveolar walls, resulting in decreased elastic recoil of the alveoli
