What are senses? |
Senses are the means by which the brain receives information about the environment and the body. (Often seen as smell, taste, sight, hearing and touch) |

What are the 2 basic groups that senses are divided into? |
General senses and special senses |

Whata the difference between general senses and special senses? |
General senses: have receptors distributed over a large part of the body. (Touch, pain, temperature, proprioception) Special senses: localized receptors to specific organs that have specialized receptors. (Smell, taste, sight, hearing & balance) |

Somatic senses and visceral senses |

What's the difference between somatic senses and visceral senses? ( both general senses) |
Somatic senses: provide sensory information about the body and the environment. Include touch, pressure, proprioception, temperature, & pain. Visceral senses: provide information about various internal organs. Include primarily pain & pressure. |

What is proprioception? (Included in somatic senses of the general senses group) |
Proprioception: is the sense of your body's position & movement. (Touch your nose with eyes closed) |

1. Muscle spindles 2. Golgi tendon organs 3. Joint capsule receptors |

What is a muscle spindle? |
3-10 specialized muscle fibers supplies by gamma motor neurons & wrapped in sensory nerve endings. Detects stretch of the muscle & is involved in maintaining muscle tone. |

What is a golgi tendon organ? |
Proprioceptive nerve ending in a tendon. Senses changes in muscle tension, lies at the origins & insertion of skeletal muscle fibers into the tendons of skeletal muscle. |

What is a joint capsule receptor? |
Sensory receptors in joint capsules. Proprioceptive receptor, monitor strength in the capsules, provide information on joint position & movement. (Free nerve endings, pacinian corpuscle, ruffini nerve endings, golgi ligament endings, golgi mazzoni corpuscles) |
