Chromosome Theory of Inheritance

A basic principle in biology stating that genes are located in chromosomes and that the behavior of chromosomes during meiosis accounts for inheritance patterns.

Wild Type

An individual with the normal (most common) phenotype.

Linked Genes

Genes located close enough together on a chromosome to be usually inherited together.

Parental Types

The genetic make up, or set of alleles, of an organism

Recombinant Types (recombinants)

An organism that is heterozygous with respect to two genes of interest.

Crossing Over

An organism that is heterozygous with respect to a single gene of interest.

Genetic Map

An offspring with a phenotype that matches one of the parental phenotypes.

Linkage Map

An offspring whose phenotype differs from that of the parents; also called recombinant types.

Map Units

The reciprocal exchange of genetic material between nonsister chromatids during prophase I of meiosis.

Cytogenic Maps

Breeding of an organism of an unknown genotype with a homozygous recessive individual to determine the unknown genotype. The ratio of phenotypes in the offspring determines the unknown genotype .
