Gluteus Maximus
O: Illium posterior to posterior gluteal line; dorsal surface of sacrum and coccyx; sacrotuberous ligament

I: Iliotibial tract, inserts into lateral condyle of tibia; gluteal tuberosity

N: Inferior gluteal nerve

A: Extends thigh (especially from flexed position) and assists in its lateral rotation; steadies thigh and assists in rising from sitting position
Gluteus medius
O: External surface of ilium between anterior and posterior gluteal lines

I: Lateral surface of greater trochanter of femur

N: Superior gluteal nerve

A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight-bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Gluteus minimus
O: External surface of ilium between anterior and inferior gluteal lines

I: Anterior surface of greater trochanter of femur

N: Superior gluteal nerve

A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight-bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Tensor fasciae latae (TFL)
O: Anterior superior iliac spine; anterior part of iliac crest

I: Iliotibial tract, which attaches to lateral condyle of tibia

N: Superior gluteal nerve

A: Abduct and medially rotate thigh; keep pelvis level when ipsilateral limb is weight-bearing and advance opposite (unsupported) side during its swing phase
Piriformis
O: Anterior surface of sacrum; sacortuberous ligament

I: Superior border of greater trochanter of femur

N: Branches of anterior rami

A: Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Obturator internus
O: Pelvic surface of obturator membrane and surrounding bones

I: Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa of femur)

N: Nerve to obturator internus

A: Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Superior and inferior gemelli
O: Superior: ischial spine
Inferior: ischial tuberosity

I: Medial surface of greater trochanter (trochanteric fossa)

N: Superior gamellus: nerve to obturator internus
Inferior gamellus: nerve to quadratus femoris

A: Laterally rotate extended thigh and abduct flexed thigh; steady femoral head in acetabulum
Quadratus femoris
O: Lateral border of ischial tuberosity

I: Quadrate tubercle on intertrochanteric crest of femur and area inferior to it

N: Nerve to quadratus femoris

A: Laterally rotates thigh; steadies femoral head in acetabulum
Semitendinosus
O: Ischial tuberosity

I: Medial surface of superior part of tibia

N: tibial division of sciatic nerve part of tibia

A: Extend thigh; flex leg and rotate it medially when knee is flexed; when thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend trunk
Semimembranosus
O: Ischial tuberosity

I: Posterior part of medial condyle of tibia; oblique popliteal ligament

N: Tibial division of sciatic nerve part of tibia

A: Extend thigh; flex leg and rotate it medially when knee is flexed; when thigh and leg are flexed, these muscles can extend trunk
Biceps femoris
O: Long head: ischial tuberosity
Short head: linea aspera and lateral supracondylar of femur

I: Lateral side of head and fibula; tendon is split at this site by fibular collateral ligament of knee

N: Long head: tibial division of sciatic nerve
Short head: common fibular division of sciatic nerve

A: Flexes leg and rotates it laterally when knee is flexed; extends thigh
