Scalenus Anterior (scalenes)
O: Tranverse Processes of 3rd through 6th
cervical vertebrae
I: Inner border of first rib (scalene
tubercle)
Action: Raises first rib (respiratory
inspiration). Acting together, they flex
neck; acting on one side, they laterally flex
rotate neck.
Scalenus Medius
O: Tranverse process of lower six cervical
vertebrae (C2 C7)
I: Upper surface of first rib
Action: Raises first rib (respiratory
inspiration). Acting together, they flex
neck; acting on one side, they laterally flex
rotate neck.
Scalenus Posterior
O: Transverse processes of lower two or
three cervical vertebrae (C5-C7)
I: Outer surface of second rib
Action: Raises second rib (respiratory
inspiration). Acting together, they flex

Sternocleidomastoid
O: -Sternal Head-manubrium of sternum

I: Mastoid process of temporal bone,

Action: -One side-lateral flexion of neck,

-Both sides together-flexes neck,

External Intercostals
O: Lower margin of upper 11 ribs
I: Superior border of rib below (each
muscle fiber runs obliquely and inserts
toward the costal cartilage.
Action: Draw ventral part of ribs upward,
increasing the volume of the thoracic
cavity for inspiration.
Internal Intercostals
O: From the cartilages to the angles of the
upper 11 ribs.
I: Superior border of the rib below (each
muscle fiber runs obliquely and inserts
away form the costal cartilage.
Action: Draw ventral part of ribs
downward, decreasing the volume of the
thoracic cavity for expiration.
External Oblique
O: Lower 8 ribs.
I: Anterior part of iliac crest, abdominal
aponeurosis to linea alba.
Action: Compresses abdominal contents,
Lateral Flexion and rotation of trunk.
(Opposite rotation. Right O rotate
you left. Left O rotate you right.)
Internal Oblique
O: Lateral half of inguinal ligament, ilia
crest, thoracolumbar fascia.
I: Cartilage of bottom 3 or 4 ribs,
abdominal aponeurosis to linea alba.
Action: Compresses abdominal contents,
lateral flexion and rotation of trunk.
(Same side rotation)
Transverse Abdominis
Action: Compresses abdomen. Stability of
lower back.
Rectus Abdominis
O: Crest of pubis, pubic symphysis
I: Cartilage of 5th, 6th, 7th ribs, xiphoid
Process.
Action: Trunk Flexion. Compresses
abdomen.
Quadratus Lumborum
O: Iliolumbar ligament, iliac crest.
I: 12th rib, transverse process of upper 4
lumbar vertebrae.
Action: Laterally flexion of trunk, fixes ribs for
forced expiration.

O: Medial 3rd superior nuchal line,
external occipital protuberance, spinous

7th cervical and all thoracic vertebrae.
I: Upper part: lateral 3rd of clavicle.
Middle part: acromion and crest of spine

Lower part: Medial portion of crest of

Action: Upper: elevates scapula
Middle: retracts (adducts)

Lower: depresses scapula, upper.

Latissimus Dorsi
O: Spinous processes of the lower 6
thoracic vertebrae, lumbar vertebrae,
sacral vertebrae, posterior part of the ilac
crest through the lumbar fascia, inferior
angle of the scapula.
I: Floor of the bicipital groove of humerus.
Action: Extension, adduction, and
medially (internal) rotation of the arm. Draws
back the shoulder downward and backward.
Keeps inferior angle of scapula against the
chest was, accessory muscle of
respiration.
Nerve: Toracodorsal nerve (C6-C8)

O: Spines of the second to fifth thoracic
vertebrae.
I: Medial border of the scapula below the
spine.
Action: Retraction of scapula, and downward
rotation.

Action: Flexes hand, synergist in adduction of hand with extensor carpi ulnaris. Ulnar deviation.

I: 4 tendons divide into 2 slips each, slips insert into the sides of middle phalanges of 4 fingers
Action: Flexes the middle phalanges of the fingers.
