What are some general features of CT?
highly vascular (unlike epithelial) except for cartilage and tendon

extracellular matrix consists of protein fibers and ground substance
What are the CT cells?
derive from mesenchymal cells

fibroblasts:
-immature cells in loose and dense CT
-secrete fibers and components of ground substance

Adipocytes:
-fat cells
-store TG (Fat)

Mast Cells:
-produce histamine

White Blood cells:
-immune response

Macrophages:
-engulf bacteria

Plasma cells:
-antibodies
What is the ground substance?
functions to support and bind cells, stores water, and allows exchange between blood and cells

contains proteins (proteoglycans) and polysaccharides (include GAG which makes it jelly like)
What are the glycosaminoglycans?
Hyluronic acid:
-lubricates joints, in vitreous of eye
-hyaluronidase secrets WBC to break down hyaluronic acid to make ground substance more liquid

Chondroitin Sulfate:
-support in cartilage, bone, skin, and blood vessels

Karatan sulfate: bone, cartilage, eye

Dermatan sulfate: skin

What are properties of Collagen fibers and where are they located?

collagen with coating of glycoprotein

produced by fibroblasts forming networks

much thinner than collagen

found in basement membrane, reticular connective tissue which forms spleen and lymph nodes
What are Embryonic tissue, Mesenchyme, and Mucous CT?
Embryonic CT: present in embryo and fetus

Mesenchyme: only in embryo under skin and along developing bones of embryo

Mucous CT: known as Wharton's Jelly is the umbilical cord of fetus

Areolar CT:
-SubQ layer under skin, papillary region of dermis. blood vessels, nerves, and body organs

Adipose tissue:
-SubQ layer under skin, around heart and kidneys, yellow bone marrow, padding around joints

Reticular CT
What are examples of Dense CT and where are they found?
Regular:
-tendons, ligaments, aponeurosis

Irregular:
-fasciae, reticular region of dermis, perioisteum of bone, perichondrium of cartilage, pericardium of heart, joint capsules and heart valves
Where is elastic CT found?
lung tissue

walls of elastic arteries

trachea

bronchial tubes

vocal cords

ligaments between vertebrae

Hyaline:
-ends of long bones
-anterior end of ribs, nose, trachea, bronchi, bronchial tubes
-embryonic and fetal skeleton

fibrocartilage:
-public symphysis and IVD
