Pregnancy tests
8-10 days after conception, analyze maternal blood or urine for human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) which is produced by trophoblastic cells of developing placenta
In general, the cardiovascular system alters in pregnancy to be...?
high flow, low resistance, and hyperdynamic
Review, what is cardiac output?
the survival of mother and baby
= HR x SV reflects the functional capacity of left ventricle to maintain BP and organ perfusion |
What is venal caval syndrome?
When the uterus impedes venous return to the right side of the heart and decreases CO, occurs when mother is supine
How do estrogen and progesterone mediate systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance?
Relax the smooth muscles of the blood vessels to decrease resistance
What is functional residual capacity and what happens to it during pregnancy?
FRC is the amount of gas exchange that occurs between ventilations, very depressed during pregnancy
Explain the diffusion gradients that create the flow of arterial blood gases
Mom's pO2 is normally 104-108 but baby is 20-31 so strong diffusion to baby. If mom is sick and her pO2 is lowered to 16 then she will hold onto her O2 b/c no gradient to move it to baby.
Baby CO2 is normally 45-60 with mom at 27-32 so gradient is from baby to mom. If mom is sick and managed at nonpregnant levels of 45 then the baby will hold onto CO2 b/c no gradient to help it get rid of CO2 |
What kind of hematologicaly state is a woman in during pregnancy?
hypercoaguable, clot faster and hang onto clots longer
Operculum
mucous plug that acts as a barrier against invasion during pregnancy, sits in between the cervix and fetal membranes
