The Importance Of Pregnancy And Child Labor

Improved Essays
You are a few days away from finally meeting your baby. Most doctors and hospitals in India do not let the pregnancy continue beyond 41 weeks. After all the parameters of gestation period are checked, doctors continue to monitor the cervix for signs of ‘ripening’. If the cervix begins to thin out, then labor is generally induced through the membrane sweep. If all labor inducing methods fail, then a Caesarian section is the only way to safely deliver the baby. (Read our article on Caesarian delivery to know more about the topic.)

The placental function and the health of the baby are monitored through ultrasound scans and cardiotocographs (administered to record the fetal heartbeat and the uterine contractions.) The location of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby and the size of the baby are key measurements to ensure the health and wellbeing of mother and child.
It is advisable that you keep a track of your baby’s movements as overdue pregnancies pose certain uncommon situations for both mother and child.
Towards the end of this week you might feel like your baby is pressing down on your cervix. This pressure is hard to describe in words, but most women recognize the pressure when it happens.
This pressure might increase as your labor begins and progresses through the different stages of labor. During active labor, the cervix dilates as much as 10 centimeters to allow the passage of the baby’s head.
The cells in the vaginal passage and the cervix produce a mucous discharge around week 41. The discharge is indication of the beginning of labor, although true labor might take a few more days to set in.

Keep an open mind and allocate answering phones to a family member if it begins bothering you. Consider the following during week 41:

Go for short walks that will help to take your mind away from the anxious waiting. Exercise and being active is also thought to stimulate labor.
Drinking some castor oil and eating spicy curries are thought to stimulate labor. Always check with your doctor before giving in to any rumors and old wives tales about kick-starting labor.
You might find sleeping to be a drain on your energy levels if you have an overactive imagination that does not allow your brain to feel rested. Try relaxing music, aromatherapy baths and scented candles.
Start telling yourself over and over that you are strong enough to handle all the labor pains and you are ready to meet your baby. A positive outlook changes a lot of factors that are directly related to your stress and exhaustion levels.
Try to have your husband and friends around you to help take your mind off things. After all, there is nothing that a good laugh can’t

I found a particular beauty in reading the section on "The three R 's: Relaxation, rhythm and ritual", using relaxation methods in between contractions, rhythm to cope and then for the mother to find her unique ritual to keep the rhythm going in each contraction. As women, we have strong intuition and when it comes to our bodies an internal knowledge that leads the way, we just need to be given the space and trust to do so. Breath work and breathing techniques are powerful, in the practice of yoga we use our breath and direct it to parts of our body that need it, we keep a steady rhythm, not ignoring the pain and opening in the body, but being with it, accepting it, listening to what it brings up and understanding that nothing is permanent. The three R 's are a philosophy that can be used and re-used not only in labour but in every day mental or physical hardships, and one that I will incorporate in my Doula…

The closer an expectant mother comes to labor the thinner the cervix becomes and the mucus plug starts to discharge once dilation has occurred. The plug might come out all at once or as a slow progression that lasts several days. The sight of the mucus plug can be alarming, especially for first time mothers. The plug can come out as a hard and bloody plug, or it can come out as a smear of mucus over a few days. Every woman is different and there isn’t a right or wrong way for the mucus plug to…

The end goal for any scientist is to find a problem, discover a way to solve it, create a hypothesis, test the hypothesis, and potentially succeed and share their discovery. This leads to advances in every industry, from medical equipment to efficient energy consumption, and even the field of psychology. The purpose behind developmental science is to better understand the factors that play a role in the formation of ourselves as individuals. One great example of a trend I am sure developmental scientists are watching closely is the effect and possible solutions to the problems created by the overuse of technology by our generation (21st century). I find great interest in any field that involves development, because development means there will…

The joys of a new baby are numerous for couples, it’s an addition to your family, a new person to love; but a new child also means new responsibilities, a new found source of stress and in some cases depression for the new moms. The particular type of depression I’m referring to is known as postpartum depression. When moms give birth to their babies, their body limits the release of certain hormones, and can cause the new moms to feel sluggish, tired and even depressed. The depression is common for most women, and last for around two weeks, typically starting around the second, or third day after the birth of their baby. This is whats known as the “postpartum baby blues” but those that last longer and are more severe are what 's referred…
