French and Indian War

A war between France and England for control over the Ohio River Valley

Sugar Act

1764

First law passed by Parliament for raising taxes in the colonies. Placed a tax on sugar imported to the Colonies from the West Indies.

Stamp Act

1765

Parliament placfed a tax on paper products in the colonies such as legal documents, newpapers and playing cards.

Sons of Liberty

Secret group of colonists formed to protect the rights of colonists and to fight taxes.

Townshend Acts

1767

Taxes on glass, paper paint, tea, wool and lead.

Boston Massacre

1770


Clash between English soldiers and colonists. Five people were killed including Crispus Attucks.

Tea Act

1770


Only tax not repealed when the Townshend Acts were repealed.

Boston Tea Party

1773

Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians, boarded ships carrying tea and dumped ALL of the tea into Boston Harbor.

Intolerable Acts

1774

Designed to punish Boston for the boston Tea Party. Closed Boston Harbor and took away rights of Massachusetts Colony to govern themselves.

First Continental Congress

1774

12 of the 13 colonies met to discuss events in Boston. They decided to stop ALL trade with Britain until Intolerable Acts were repealed.

Battle of Lexington & Concord

1775

british troops went to Concord to destroy weapons the Colonists had hidden. The colonists had moved them. In Lexington, the Redcoats confronted colonists....shots were fired.

John Adams

One of the writers of the Declaration of Independence. Later he would become the 2nd President.

Samuel Adams

Helped form the secret group Sons of Liberty.

Benjamin Franklin

He asked Parliament for representation. He helped write the Declaration of Independence.

Patrick Henry

Made a famous speech encouraging others to fight for independence...."Give me liberty or give me death" Later he was accused of treason.

Thomas Jefferson

Main writer of the Declaration of Independence. Later he would become the 3rd President.

Thomas Paine

Author of "Common Sense", a pamphlet that gave reasons why colonies should declare independence.

Paul Revere

Rode through the countryside warning "The British are coming!"

George Washington

Leader of the Continental Army. Later he would become our 1st President of the United States.
