Aaron Burr:
he was a very unpopular vice president. He killedhis political rival, Alexander Hamilton, in a duel. Then he tried to pulltogether a revolution to secede from America.
Andrew Jackson:
7th president of the United States. Was re-elected to a 2nd term. One of our most powerful and forceful presidents. Nickname “Old Hickory”
Barbary Pirates:
mostly Muslim pirates. Attacked and captured many European and American ships. America stood up to them.
Basic of Southern Economy:
Agriculture. It was mainly based around exports like cotton and wheat
Burr Conspiracy:
Aaron burr tried to secede from Americaand form his own country in North America. Burr developed a planknown as the Burr Conspiracy to create a Western empire using LouisianaTerritory, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Mexico. He was captured before he couldbring his army to battle. He was tried but not enough evidence to convict himof treason.
Cumberland Road:
It was the first official roadway. Was also called the National Road.Itconnected Cumberland, Maryland to Wheeling, Virginia. It would eventually reachall the way to Vandalia, Illinois.
Francis Scott Key:
He is the man who wrote the Star Spangled Banner. He was a prominentWashington lawyer who went to Baltimore to rescue a friend captured atWashington. He was there to negotiate his friend’s release but held there whileBritain attacked Fort McHenry. He work the poem the Star Spangled Banner duringthis time. It was set to music and in 1931, it officially became America’snational anthem.
Impressment:
the practice of forcing American soldiers(kidnapping) to fight in the British navy. They would capture them fromAmerican ships and force them into the British Navy.
James Monroe:
the 5th president of the United States. was elected President of the U.S. in 1816 and re-elected for a 2nd term in 1820. He was of the Republican Party. Created the Monroe Doctrine.
John C. Calhoun:
he was Andrew Jackson’s vice president. (Earned the nickname war hawks). He disagreed with President Jackson and resigned.
Kitchen Cabinet:
Andrew Jackson’s unofficial politicaladvisers. They were his loyal friends
Lewis and Clark:
explorerscommissioned by President Jefferson to explore the new territory of theLouisiana Purchase in 1804. They discovered several passes through the Rockiesand established friendly relationships with many Indian tribes. Their guide was Sacagawea
Missouri Compromise:
This admitted two more states to the United States:Missouri and Maine. It provideda way to maintain the balance between free and slave states. Missouri was added as a slave state and Maineas a free state. It also prohibited slavery in the rest of the LouisianaPurchase north of the 36 30 line. It passed both houses of Congress in 1820.
Napoleon:
Louisiana Purchase He sold Louisiana to the U.S. after he realized it was useless to him and he needed needed money to fight Europe and defeat Britain.
Old ironsides:
TheUSS Constitution utterly destroyed the Java off the coast of Brazil in Dec.1812. AS a result of this victory, the Constitution won the title “OldIronsides.” The moto of the war was “Don’t Give Up the Ship.”
Sacagawea:
Accompanied Lewis and Clark on their exploration along with her French-Canadian husband. She was an interpreter and guide.
Specie Circular:
in 1836, issued by President Jackson, stated that Western (Public lands)lands could only be purchased with gold or silver. These lands could no longerbe purchased on credit. Land prices dropped and speculators were left holdingthey could not sell to meet their obligations. Banks couldn’t make good theirnotes in gold and silver. Commodity and stock prices begin to drop. In 1837, afinancial panic hit the country and a depression started that lasted until1843. By this time, Jackson had retired.
Tecumseh:
A Shawnee chief whotraveled from present-day Wisconsin to West Florida convincing tribes to joinin a confederacy to drive the whites from their land. The Battle of Tippecanoelargely crushed the Indian confederacy. He was killed at the Battle of theThames and this brought the total collapse of the Indian confederacy.
Tippecaanoe:
Was a successful battle against theIndians led by William Harrison who would become President. His campaign sloganwas “Tippecanoe and Tyler too.”
Trail of Tears:
After a series of court battles, the Cherokees were moved west along with others. They called their long trip to Oklahoma the Trail of Tears.
William Henry Harrison:
the first President of the U.S. todie in office. He died from pneumonia 31 days after becoming President of theU.S. His campaign slogan was “Tippecanoe and Tyler too.” Only President from the Whigs party.
Zebulon Pike:
Hewas an explorer who was commissioned to explore the northern half of theLouisiana Territory in 1806. During his exploration, he discovered the ColoradoRockies where Pike’s Peak is named in his honor.
Louisiana Purchase:
Considered the greatest real estate deal in American History.
