Moses Austin began selling out Texas land to America (obviously before Texas was a state and was still Spanish territory) and Stephen Austin was his son who took over the family business after he died.

Smith claims he was given scripture in which he translated - this became the book of Mormon. This is where Mormonism was created. Smith asserted that the book of Mormon was more authoritative than the bible.

Because you had parties (whigs, Democrats) in the north and the South and so because of their diversity in location they would have different opinions about hot topics like slavery.

It was the idea to let the people who get to the territories first decide what that state will become- slavery or slavery free wise.

Who created and what is the compromise of 1850?

Henry Clay created the compromise that is needed to decide whether or not California is a free or a slave state. The compromise of 1850 declares that California is free state but Utah and new Mexico when ready will be slave states PLUS DC becomes free. South is also promised a fugitive slave act. This bill couldn't go without the help of Stephen Douglass

What was the fugitive slave act?

Made it so that if you're a slave and you run free north it was illegal and could be enforced (up until then it wasn't).

Douglass broke the bill up into 4 seperate bills and got them all to pass.

What is the Kansas Nebraska act of 1854?

Stephen Douglass wants to build a railroad into the territories but needs support so he rallies the south by saying he'll support popular sovereignty there and so the southerners flood to Kansas to help and it is decreed that when the state is ready the people will vote for its choice in free or slave.



Within no time both south and North are flooding into Kansas trying to outweigh the other. Warfare breaks out - this is called bleeding Kansas. They finally vote: slave has won. Northerners aren't going out without a fight - they stay and create their own capital in Kansas. Kansas now had 2 capitals. The president (Pierce) acknowledged the slavery capital. This now made the northern capital a rebellion, and so the slavery capital fought them - there was bloodshed.

Who was Charles Sumner?

He spoke out about how bad the bloodshed in Kansas was and how the southerners are butchering the free soil party. He was beaten with a cane from Preston Brooks for this.

Who is Preston brooks?

A senator who's father was mentioned by name by Charles Sumner on the floor of Congress and so later brooks beats Charles Sumner with his cane for this.

Slaves were labeled as non - citizens and therefore had no part in the US constitution for protection. This decision also outlawed the Missouri compromise, and the compromise of 1850
