S1 is mostly the sound of |
mitral and tricuspid closure |
|
S1 is heard loudest at |
the cardiac apex |
|
How to listen to S1 |
Listen with the diaphragm and the bell of the stethoscope at the apex and in the 4th left intercostal space, where it may at times be louder. |
|
S1 defines the onset of |
systole |
|
At normal heart rates, systole is of __________ duration than diastole |
shorter |
|
How to recognize S1 at rapid heart rates. |
At rapid rates the duration of diastole is shortened more than that of systole. At HR>130, systole and diastole may be of equal duration. 1. During auscultation, gently palpate the carotid artery; S1 precedes the palpable arterial upstroke, whereas S2 immediately follows this pulse. 2. Also, the apical impulse is coincidental with the onset of S1, whereas S2 follows the apical lift.
