Chronic stress
Suppresses the immune system. What is stressful is objective, and depends on you.
Stressor
Anything that causes stress.
Acute stress:
Sudden, short term, intense (like a headache)
Chronic stress
Long-term, long-lasting, bad relationship
Type A Personalities:
Ambitious; more prone to heart disease, impatient & time urgent, competitive, cynically hostile/pissy people
2004 studies:
Have shown that cynically hostile people are more likely to get heart disease.
Type B Personalities:
Relaxed & Carefree
Adjustment disorder:
Identifiable stressor then an emotional or behavioral response
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:
onsidered an anxiety disorder; identify a stressor of intense fear. Reasons for PTSD to occur/have an event: Exposure to a traumatic event; must have a re-experiencing of the traumatic event, avoidance of things that remind them of the event; can be acute or chronic; recognized as people who are on guard all the time or easily scared; must be at least 1 month to be PTSD.
Treatment for PTSD:
Support groups & Direct Exposure Therapy
Types of panic disorders:
PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder with or without agoraphobia, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder:
Feeling intense, worried; nervous; direct exposure therapy needed and or medication. Drugs can cause unintentional overdose.
Specific phobias:
Irrational fear of a specific object or situation. Symptoms: Fear. Treatment: Relaxation & Exposure therapy
Obsessive-Compulsive disorder:
Obsession: Persistent, unwanted thoughts. Compulsion: Repetitive behaviors that the person feels driven to perform. Treatment: Behavior therapy/anti-depressants.
Mood disorders:
Major depressive disorders, dysthmyic disorder, seasonal affective disorder, bipolar affective disorder, cyclothmic disorder
Major depressive disorder:
Sad mood, loss of interest, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness; change in sleep or appetite; impaired concentration, thoughts of suicide. Treatment: Medication & therapy. Using both seems to work best on individual. Must have 5 or more for 2 weeks to be major depression.

Because of life events
Endogenous:
No reason, biological
Dysthmic disorder
Mild, chronic depression. Sad mood, lost of interest, decreased energy; impaired concentration; feeling of guilt, worthlessness, hopelessness, change in sleep or appetite, thoughts of suicide. Treatment: Medication or therapy. “Chronic, low grade funk.” Must last for at least 2 years.
Seasonal Affective Disorder:
Sad mood, mild depression. Treatment: Light box, exposure to sun light.
Bipolar Affective Disorder:
Lows are just like depression. Highs: High energy, days without sleep, racing thoughts. Treatment: Mood stabilizer. NEVER antidepressants. Only in bipolar is there a history of manic, and there only has to be one episode of manic to be considered bipolar.
Suicide:
Nationally, one suicide every 17 minutes. Three red flags of suicide are a) thoughts of suicide, b a) plan, c) a means to a plan.
Cyclothmic disorder:
Low grade bipolar; same as bipolar just not as extreme; treatment unknown.
Women & Suicide/Men & Suicide
Women attempt suicide more often than men but men complete it more often than women.

Somatoform disorder-
a group of disorders that involve physical symptoms and complaints with out any evidence of physical pathology.
Hypochondrasis:
Preoccupation with fears of getting a serious disease based on the misinterpretation of bodily symptoms. The preoccupation exists despite medical evaluation and reinsurance.
Treatment for hypochondriac:

Psychogenic pain disorder:
Real pain caused by psychological factors
Treatment for psychogenic pain disorder:
Relaxation therapy, medication
Malingering
Faking symptoms and is motivated by some external incentive. Treatment: Therapy
Factitious
Faking symptoms for no real incentive.
