Schizophrenia:

Out of touch with reality; not a split personality

Positive schizophrenia (in terms of given):
|
Delusions (firmly held beliefs not based in reality), hallucinations (Sensory experiences without external stimulus)

Disorganized schizophrenia:
|
Disorganized speech – words don’t make since; disorganized behavior – throwing of arms

Negative (in terms of taken away):
|
Flat affect – no facial expression; lack of speech (poverty of speech – says very little), avolition – can’t get the person to do anything; no motivation – anhedonia – inability to experience pleasure; go to comedy and don’t laugh

Treatment of schizophrenia:
|
Anti-psychotic drugs; 1st generation focused on positive symptoms; 2nd generation focused on positive and negative, fewer side effects.

Treatement of positive symptoms
|
Medication treats the positive symptoms; side effect – Tardivedyskenisia – late appearing movements.

Age of onset of schizophrenia:
|
Early 20’s or late teens

Cause of schizophrenia
|
Biologically based, but genetics do not play the whole role. Genetics will play a role but not the entire role. Most important transmitter for schizophrenia is dopamine in access.

Schizophrenogenic mother theory:
|
was a cold aloof mother, which gives you predisposition to schizophrenia.

Cognitive Disorders:
|
Changes in cognitive functioning which are the most obvious signs of a damaged brain.

Delirium:
|
Acute confusion-al state, sudden onset (medical emergency)… Caused by fever, medication, head injury, UTI.

Dementia:
|
Refers to cognitive confusion (simple words); progressive and long lasting.

Alzheimer’s disease:
|
Characterized by gradual and progressive memory impairment and cognitive decline. Alzheimer’s is a one sub system of dementia. Cause: Most likely hereditary; onset in 60-70, occasionally in 40-50 but rare. Treatment unknown; just drugs that slow down the progression.

TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury):
|
Caused by accidents, falls, sports injuries. Treatment: Extensive rehabilitation. Pg 504 for lobes of the brain.

ADHD:
|
Inattention – easily distractible; impulsivity – acting before thinking; hyperactivity – overly energetic. Must display symptoms in two different settings. Stimulant prescription used for treatment, eg, Ritalin, Concerta, vyvanse, non-stimulant strattera, behavior therapy, praise good behavior; ignore bad behavior … Cause, unknown

Oppositional Defiant Disorder:
|
Bad kid. A recurrent pattern of negative defiant disobedient and hostile behavior towards authority figures. Treatment: Unknown (parent’s choice)

Conduct disorder:
|
: (Heading towards juvenile centers). Persistent, receptive violation of rules and disregard for rights of others. Symptoms: destructive, abuse animals, violate rules; runaway. Cause, unknown; treatment, unknown

Separation anxiety:

Childhood depression
|
Just like adult depression; also complains of somatic problems. Treatment: Medication & Counseling.

Enuresis:
|
Bedwetting after age of 5 years. Treatment: Imipramine (anti-depressant), ddavp (nasal spray) behavioral therapy (Bell and pad).

Encopresis
|
after age 4 continuing to have bowel movements in pants. Treatment: Toileting schedule

Tourette’s syndrome:
|
Vocal ticks or physical ticks; cause, unknown, treatment, unknown
|

Autism:
|
Aloof or apart from others; lack of social interaction; delay of speech. No cure; expensive individual treatment.
