Buffer

A solution that opposes the change in ph when an acid or alkali is added to the solution.

Convert [H+] to pH

pH = -log10([H+])

[H+] = 10^-(pH)

Monodentate ligand

A species that has one lone pair of electrons with which it can form a coordinate (dative covalent) bond with a central metal atom/ion.

Bidentate ligand

A species that has two lone pairs of electrons with which it can form a coordinate (dative covalent) bond with a central metal atom/ion.

Transition metal

A metal that forms at least one stable ion with a partially filled d subshell.

Zinc forms Zn2+ so has a configuration of 3s2 3p6 3d10. Full d subshell so isn't a transition metal.

Scandium forms Sc3+ with configuration 3s2 3p6. No electrons in the d orbitals so not a transition metal.

Electron configuration of Cr and Cu

Cu: [Ar] 3d10 4s1

Cr: [Ar] 3d5 4s1

Usually 4s orbital fills before 3d10 but in these cases the d subshell takes the extra electron and not the 4s orbital.
