Vascular Plants
Plants that have vascular tissue. They are better suited to life on land than are nonvascular plants. Vascular tissue transports water quickly and efficiently throughout the plant's body. It also transports the food produced in the leaves to other parts of the plant, including the roots. Vascular tissue also strengthens and provides stability to the plant.
Frond
The leaf of a fern plant.
Ferns
Ferns are plants that first appeared on earth 400 million years ago. Today, there are over 12,000 species of ferns. Fern's stems are underground. Leaves grow upward from the top side of the stems and the roots grow downward from the bottom of the stems. Ferns are useful to people: many people have ferns as houseplants, people can eat some ferns (fiddleheads), ferns planted alongside rice plants can provide a home for bacteria that produce natural fertilizers that can help rice plants grow.
