Protists
Protists are like a junk-drawer kingdom. Protists don't really fit into any other biological kingdom. They are all organisms that have cells with nuclei. They all live in moist surroundings. Otherwise, they differ. Some are unicellular, some are multicellular. Some are heterotrophs, others are autotrophs, others are both. Some can move, some zoom around. Protists can be placed in the following categories: 1) animal-like, 2) fungus-like, and 3) plant-like.
Pseudopods
Temporary bulges of the cell membrane that fill with cytoplasm. Pseudopods form when the cell membrane pushes outward in one location.
Contractile Vacuole
A structure that collects the extra water from the cytoplasm and then expels it from the cell.
Cilia
Hairlike projections from cells that move with a wavelike pattern.
Symbiosis
A close relationship between two organisms in which at least one of the organisms benefits.
Mutualism
When both partners benefit from living together.
Spore
A tiny cell that is able to grow into a new organism.
Algae
Plantlike protists
Protozoans
Animal-like protists
Pigments
Chemicals that produce color
