NetBIOS includes three name resolution methods: ...
broadcasts, WINS, and the Lmhosts file.
NETBIOS BROADCAST
The first name resolution mechanism enabled by NetBIOS is the use of NetBIOS broadcasts
over IPv4. Computers using NetBIOS to resolve a name will send out broadcasts to the local network requesting the owner of that name to respond with its IPv4 address. |
What is WINS name resolution?
Directory of Computer names and their associated IP addres. Enables NetBIOS namre resolution beyond local subnet
Name Resolution by LMHOSTS file
>Static file
>Created manually >Stored in %systemRoot%\System32\Drivers\Etc >Maps NetBIO names to IPs, enabling computer to resolve name when DNS, LLMNR or NetBIOS failed. |
How can NetBIOS Enable or Disable?
there are 2 methods: Manual from the local area connection>TCP/IPv4 Properties>Advanced TCP/IP settings
or DHCP server |
What are the NetBIOS Node Types?
Broadcast (b-node)
Point-to-point (p-node) Mixed (m-node) Hybrid (h-node) default for Win clients since Vista |
What command do you use to find the NetBIOS current node status?
ipconfig /all
C:\Users\Administrator>ipconfig /all Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : WS08r2-98 Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : trans.local |
What are the NetBIOS advantages?
>Resolves names of all Windows OS, including prior to Vista, with no configuration.
>If running with WINS, NetBIOS can resolve names of computers in neighboring subnets. |
What are the NetBIOS limitations?
>Impractical for large networks.
>Not Recommended for High security areas. >Not compatible with IPv6 |
What is the best way to configure WINS in a large organization?
Configure replication so that each WINS database remains up to date. Configure push-pull for effective update one to another.
What is DNS Name Resolution?
DNS is a service that enables to locate computer and network resources by name on and IP inetrnetwork, providing an hierarchical structure and easy administration.
What is DNS namespace?
It is the naming system that DNS uses, a hierarchical and logical tree structure.
root ( . ) .edu/ \.com pixa.au.edu/ \.mtv.com.au |
FQDN
Stands for "fully qualified domain name" and it is a DNS domain name and identifies uniquely a device and its location relatively to the root.
What are the three top level domains?
>Organizational domains .- primary function or activity .com, .net, .edu, and .org.
>Geographical domains .- use the two-character country and region codes >Reverse domains special domains, named in-addr.arpa, that are used for IP-address-to-name resolution (referred to as reverse lookups). |
What is an example of a Private Domain Namespace?
myland.local
Mcdonals.local Ford.local |
Name 2 DNS programs?
>DNS Server service in Windows Server
or >Berkeley Internet Name Domain (BIND) in UNIX |
what are a DNS server possible replies to a query?
>Provide the information
>Pointer to another server >Information is unavailable or does not exist. |
Name the DNS Componets
> DNS Server
> Zones > Resolvers > Resource records |
