What is balance?

It is the arrangement of elements in a composition to achieve visual equilibrium

What is symmetrical balance?

Two identical elements arranged about a common axis

What is asymmetrical balance?

It depends on equalizing the visual or optical weight of a composition of unequal objects about a common axis

What is radial balance?

A type of symmetrical balance upon which elements are arranged upon a central point.

What is harmony?

It is the agreement of the parts to each other and the whole. Relating a number of different elements through common characteristic (form, scale, or colour). Grouping objects close together and relating them to a common element.

What is rhythm?

The repetition of elements in a regular pattern

What is gradation rhythm?

Where size, colour or value of design elements change gradually as elements repeat

What is contrast?

Juxtaposition of dissimilar elements, the way we perceive the difference between things

What is proportion?

It is the relationship between one element and another and it is relative.

What is the golden ratio?

One which a single line is divided into two unequal segments such that the ratio of the smaller part is to the larger part as the larger part is to the whole.


It is called the golden section when translated into a rectangle

What is the fibonacci series?

It is a sequence of numbers beginning with 0 and 1, each successive number is the sum of the previous two numbers.

What is the Modulor System?

Developed by Le Corbusier, it is loosely based on the golden section but uses the human body as a starting point. He developed two series (blue and red) each with 10 numbers. He believed these dimensions would help maintain human scale in design.
