How do you test whether an object is charged and whether it is positive or negative?

Look for attraction and repulsion.
Like charges repel. opposites attract.
Forces get weaker the further apart they are.

How can you see if something has an electrostatic charge?

Use a Gold-Leaf Electroscope.
1. Metal disc connected to metal rod. At bottom are two pieces of thin gold leaf.
2. When rod with known charge is brought near to disc electrons will be repelled or attracted depending on rod
3. this induces charge in disc and rod and gold leaves.
4. the gold leaves will have same charge and will repel each other causing them to rise.

Suspending a charged rod on a thread. seeing if there is an attraction or repulsion when the rod you're testing with a known charge is brought close to it.

How do Van de Graaff generators make your hair stand on end?

Van de Graff generator is used to demonstrate electrostatic charges. rubber belt moves on rollers under metal dome, generating electrons. If stand on chair and touch dome electrons flow through your body. your hairs all become negatively charged and repel each other.

Droplets of ink are forced out of nozzle and electrically charged.
droplets are deflected as they move between two plates (one negative one positive)
repelled or attracted.
size and direction of voltage on each plate directs droplets onto paper.

3. whiter bits of what copying make lght fall on plate and charge leaks away.
4. charged areas attract negatively charged black powder which is attracted to paper.

Creates a huge spark.
