IP addressing on the internet Every device on the internet has a unique IP address that it uses when sending or receiving packets. |
Domain Name System (DNS) Each DNS server has a database of IP addresses which is constantly updated. When a user requests a URL the domain name server looks it up and returns the IP address or searches for the address on the other DNS servers. This means people don't need to remember IP addresses. |
