What is the internet?
The internet is a worldwide collection of computer networks. The worldwide web(www) is the collection of all the webpages on the internet. Things like online gaming and MSN messenger use the internet but not the WWW
Hardware on the internet
Modem: Is an analogue to digital converter. It converts the digital signals produced by the computer into analogue signals that can be sent over a phone line.
Router: Receives packets from all over the network and sends them on their destination
Hub: Receives packets from all over the network and sends them on to every other device on the network
IP addressing on the internet
Every device on the internet has a unique IP address that it uses when sending or receiving packets.
Domain Name System (DNS)
Each DNS server has a database of IP addresses which is constantly updated.
When a user requests a URL the domain name server looks it up and returns the IP address or searches for the address on the other DNS servers.
This means people don't need to remember IP addresses.
