106.1

Prowords
These are used to enable clear communication for brevity and clear communication.
106.2

Whistle Signals
As a rule, only three types of whistle signals are used to avoid confusion:
1) Attention to Orders is indicated by one short blast on the whistle.
2) Cease Fire is indicated by one long blast on the whistle.
3) Hostile Aircraft or Mechanized Vehicle is indicated by three long blasts repeated several times.
106.3

Discuss the factors that affect the capabilities of radio communications.
To communicate with each other, radios must:

- Have a common frequency
- Be able to transmit and receive the same type signal.
106.3

Some consideration for communicating are:
- Most infantry radios are FM (frequeny modulated and will not communicate with AM (amplitude modulated) radios.
-Squelch settings on the radios must also be used correctly.
- Weather
- Terrain
- Antenna power
- Location of radio
106.5

Intelligence Cycle
The intelligence cycle usually consists of 5 steps:
1. Planning and Direction
2. Collection
3. Processing
4. Production
5. Dissemination
106.5

Discuss the purpose of the JOC
JOC: Joint Operations Center - A focal point for all operational matters.
106.6

Discuss the maximum transmission ranges for each of the following settings:

PACE
PACE - acronym for Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency types of communications
106.6

Discuss the maximum transmission ranges for each of the following settings:

DOWN RANGE COMMS GEAR
BFT, XTS-5000, AN/PRC-148, PRC-117, PRC-150, DJ cell, World cell, Iridium phone, Thuraya phone, and HSWAN
106.6

Discuss the maximum transmission ranges for each of the following settings:

RADIO
1. Both must be on same FREQ
2. BEADWINDOW - someone passed classifed on unsecure net
3. MINIMIZE - used in emergency, informs members to reduce message traffic
106.7

COMSEC
COMSEC

- The safeguarding of communications information, also known as communications security.
- Communications Security Material System (CMS) Custodian: the CMS custodian is reponsible to the commanding officer.
106.8

What is meant by the term Two-Peron Integrity (TPI)?
Two - person integrity (TPI) is the security measure taken to prevent single-person access to COMSEC keying material.
106.9

ACCESS
Access - the ability and opportunity to obtain knowledge of classified information.
106.9

CLASSIFICATION
Classfication - the determination that official information requires, in the interest of national security.
106.9

COMPROMISE
Compromise - A security violation which has resulted in confirmed or suspected exposure of classified information or material to an unauthorized person.
106.9

NEED TO KNOW
Need to know - A determination made by an authorized holder of classified information that a prospective recipient required access to specific classified information.
106.9

CLEARANCE
Clearance - A formal determination that a person meets the personnel security standards and is thus eligible for access to classified information.
106.10

MINIMIZE
Minimize - used during a crisis or emergency, a message transmitted across a net to inform members of the net to reduce the message traffic drastically.
106.10

EEFI
EEFI - Essential Elements of Friendly Information, are specific items of information which if revealed and correlated with other information would degrade the security of military operations, projects, or missions in the applicable areas.
106.10

BEADWINDOW
Beadwindow - A real-time procedure used to alert circuit operators that an unauthorized disclosure has occcurred over a non-secured circuit.
106.10

GINGERBREAD
Gingerbread - A warning sent over the net to alert operators that hostile forces are attempting to intrude on the net by Imitative Communications Deceptions (ICD).
106.11

HF 3 MHZ - 30 MHZ
Naval communications within the HF band can be grouped into four general types of services: point-to-point, ship-to-shore, ground-to-air, and fleet broadcast.
106.11

VHF 30 MHZ - 300 MHZ
Known as line-of-sight transmission bands. The line-of-sight characteristic makes the VHF band ideal for amphibious operations (beach landing from sea craft).
106.11

UHF 300 MHZ - 3 GHZ
Known as line-of-signt transmission bands. The line-of-sight characteristic makes UHF well suited for tactical voice transmissions (manuevering of ships traveling together).
106.12

Things that affect Radio Communications
Radios must have a common frequency to communicate with each other. Most infantry radios are FM (frequency modulated) and will not communicate with AM (amplitude modulated) radios. Squelch settings on the radios must also be used correctly.
