Age at onset
Type 1- before 30. Type 2- after 45, commonly 60
Causes
Type 1-destruction of beta cells by autoimmune process, no or very little insulin produced. Contributors: genetics. Type 2-insulin becomes ineffective to production at pancreas or insensitivity of the cells. Risk factors: genetics, obesity, race, ethnicity, HTN, low HDLs, high triglycerides
Symptoms at onset
Type 1-3 P's, recent and sudden weight loss, s/s of DKA. Type 2-3 P's, fatigue
Use of insulin
Type 1-required. Type 2-oral meds, diet, exercise might be enough
Use of oral hypoglycemic agents
Type 1- doesn't work, must have exogenous insulin. Type 2- yes, used in conjunction with diet, exercise
Common complications
Type 1-DKA, macro: altered lipid metabolism, increased risk for atherosclerosis. Micro: retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy. Type 2-NO DKA but rest same as type 1
