What is the fuel selector switch on a PWC OR ski craft?

This switch can help you avoid becoming stranded without fuel. Turn to “off” when engine is off, turn to “on” when underway and “reserve” if you run out of fuel while underway to return to shore.

What is the pre-departure checklist?

* check weather

* check steering, throttle and lights

* check for fuel leaks in tank, fuel lines and carburetor

* check engine for oil leaks

* check hoses and connections for leaks & cracks

* drain any water from engine compartment and check bilge plug is replaced and secure

* check to make sure battery is charged and check fire extinguishers

* check ignition safety switch and wrist lanyard

* make sure you have enough personal floatation devices (PFDs) and they are in good order

* leave a float plan with a good friend

To prevent collisions, every operator should follow the three basic rules of navigation. What are they?

* Practice good seamanship

*keep a sharp lookout

* maintain a safe speed and distance

When operating a power driven vessel, you must give way to:

* any vessel not under command

* any vessel restricted in it's maneuverability, such as a vessel towing another, or one constrained by it's draft such as a large ship in a canal

* a sailboat under sail unless it's overtaking

* a vessel engaged in commercial fishing

When operating a vessel under sail, you must give way to:

* any vessel not under command

*any vessel restricted under its maneuverability

* a vessel engaged in commercial fishing

* any vessel you are overtaking

What is a stand-on vessel?

The vessel that should maintain it's course and speed

What is a give-way vessel?

The vessel that must take early and substantial action to avoid collision by stopping, slowing down or changing course

What happens when 2 power vessels meet head on?

Neither is the give-way vessel, both should keep to the starboard.

What is Starboard?

Right

What happens when a power vs sailboat meet head on?

The powerboat is the give way vessel and the sailboat is the stand-on vessel.

What is port?

Left

What happens when 2 power vessels meet in a crossing situation?

The vessel on the operator's port (left) side is the give-way vessel. The vessel on the operator's starboard (right), is the stand on vessel

What happens when a powerboat vs. a sailboat meet in a crossing situation?

The powerboat is the give-way vessel, the sailboat is the stand-on vessel

What happens when a vessel starts to overtake another vessel, be it powerboat or sailboat?

The vessel that is overtaking another vessel is the give-way vessel. The vessel being overtaken is the stand-on vessel.

What are the 4 common navigation lights used at night?

* Sidelight

* Sternlight

* Masthead light

* All round white light

Describe the sidelights.

These are red and green lights also called combination lights, because they are visible to another vessel approaching from the side or head-on. Red light indicates a vessel's port (left) and the green light indicates a vessel's starboard (right)

Describe the stern light.

This white light is seen behind or nearly behind the vessel

Describe the masthead light.

This white light shines forward and to both sides and is required on all power-driven vessels. A masthead light must be displayed by all vessels when under engine power at night. The absence of this light indicates a sailboat under sail.

Describe All-round white light.

On power-driven vessels less than 39.4 feet, this light may be used to combine a masthead light and stern light into a single white light that can be seen by other vessels from any direction. This light serves as an anchor light when sidelights are extinguished.

When encountering vessels at night, what's happening when you see only a white light and what should you do?

You are overtaking another vessel. It is the stand on vessel whether it is underway or anchored. You may go around it either side.

When encountering vessels at night, what's happening when you see a green and white light and what should you do?

You are the stand-on vessel. However, remain alert in case the other vessel operator does not see you or does not know the navigation rules.

When encountering vessels at night, what's happening when you see a red and white light and what should you do?

You must give way to the other vessel. Slow down and allow the other vessel to pass, or you may turn to the right and pass behind the other vessel.

Encountering a sailboat at night. What's happening when you see only a red light or only a green light and what should you do?

You may be approaching a sailboat under sail and you must give way. The sailboat under sail is always the stand-on vessel.

What do red lights, red colors and even numbers mean?

Indicates the right side of the channel as a boater enters from the open sea or heads upstream

What do green lights, green colors and odd numbers mean?

Indicates the left side of the channel as a boater enters from the open sea or heads upstream

What do red AND green colors and / or lights mean?

Indicates the preferred or primary channel. If green is on top, the preferred channel is on the right as the boater enters from the open sea. If red is on top, the preferred channel is on the left.

What is a nun? (not a woman in a habit ;-)

Red, cone-shaped buoys marked with even numbers

What are cans?

Green, cylindrical-shaped marked with odd numbers

What does a black and white vertical striped buoy indicate?

Means don't go between the buoy and shoreline

What does a buoy marked with red on top and white on the bottom mean?

If heading east or west, go south of this buoy. If heading north or south, go west of this buoy.

What are daymarks?

Permanently placed signs attached to structures such as posts in the water. Common daymarks are red triangles (equivalent to nuns) and green squares (equivalent to cans)

What does red right returning mean?

It's a reminder saying, reminding of the correct course when returning from open waters or heading upstream. The red buoys are on the right as you are returning from open sea

What does a red and white vertical striped buoy mean?

Mark mid-channels or fairways, can pass on either side.

What is an all black NH spar buoy?

Marks one side of a well-defined channel. Go between it and it's companion the "all red" spar buoy

As owner of a boat, you are only responsible for an accident if you are the operator of the boat at that time. True or False?

False
