Collision can also be defined as the change in form of a vessel as a result of an impact with a solid object. Ship collision is considered to be the worst of marine accidents as it leads to extreme effects on human and marine life.
The sea route traffic has increased and there has also been a sharp increase in the speed levels. This has led to an increase in …show more content…
Self-complacency
Collisions and groundings are inevitable unless you can maintain a constant vigilance to avoid it. In order to avoid this, there exists a general set of Federal and International rules of conduct between vessels known collectively as the 'rules of the road'. Part of the rules cover what lights vessels should show which is covered in Navigation Lights. Another part of the rules is meant specifically to guide actions of vessels in close proximity to each other. Just as we stop our car at a red light and go around another car to pass it, there exist maneuvering rules to guide us when we are on the water.
The rules of the road cover every type of water craft from small to large. However, there are situations the rules do not cover. For instance, when three or more vessels converge there are no specific guides to use except common sense. If we know the rules of conduct between two vessels, then we will have a very good idea of how to react when there are more than two vessels meeting or passing.
Key sea lanes are already busy and as world economies expand, the number and size of ships trading internationally, currently 50,000 vessels, will increase. According to studies, it shows that 80 percent of marine accidents were attributable to human error is perhaps misleading, since all have some human
