Personal Narrative: Mad River Boat Trips

In 2011 my family and I took a trip out West in an RV. My family consists of my parents, older brother Patrick ( now a sophomore at Madison), younger brother Declan ( now a sophomore at MUHS), and my younger sister Nora ( now in 8th grade). We were all there for this trip just younger. On our trip one of the main attractions we stopped at for a few days was at the Grand Teton National Park in Jackson Hole Wyoming. While in the national park we visited a horse ranch where we rode around the Teton range, hiked around one of the lakes at the base of one of the mountains, fished, and went white water rafting.
The white water rafting is where the story begins. It was Day 8 Wednesday June 29 2011. The family climbed into yellowstone and headed to the Mad River Boat Trips in Jackson Hole, for the beginning of our excursion. There we were given wetsuits due to the freezing temperature of the water, 38 degrees cold. We piled into a bright green school bus along with 30 or so people and we were shuttled to our drop in point, the Snake River. It was here that the small anxieties began to

Relatively simple. Rule Number 2: Feet downstream if you fall out of the boat. This is to protect you from having your foot caught then dragged underwater and drowning. Rule Number 3: Keep paddling while going over rapids. This is easier said than done. If you have ever crest over a wave, it is very hard to contact water with your paddle. Gavin gave us the report of the river, record high amount of water, 38 degrees and 8ft tall waves. Holy shit what have we gotten ourselves into. We thought that but we did it anyways, because we were going to complete it, come hell or high water (literally). We got into our life vests, which we were told that if they were comfortable, we were unsafe, and our helmets. The helmets helped protect us throughout our head-cracking adventure, hopefully which did not

Crashing underwater in the North Georgia mountains, I wondered how I ended up here, upside down in the freezing cold water of the Cartecay river. My friend Jackson is a thrill-seeking kayaker, the total opposite of me. He’s outgoing and loves adventure, while I’m a bit introverted and cautious. Last winter Jackson convinced me to go kayaking, assuring me the river was easy to navigate and harmless.…

Every summer as tradition dictates I take my cousins on a hiking trip. Every year we try to hike a different mountain for the day and this year four of us went to hike Mt. Tecumseh in NH. This year was particularly an amazing experience as it was great to spend the day with them all together before I had to go to college. I also got to utilize my iPhone’s camera to its full potential to take amazing photographs (which is a new hobby of mine).…

The Wyoming backcountry is stunning. There is an infinite blanket of trees in every direction. The sky has two moods either happy: blue with cotton ball clouds or angry: a stormy scary black color. The air smells like sage and pine -- fresh and crisp. I was conceived at the bottom of Grand Canyon. At four months old I was on my first river trip. The Colorado River banks were my first playground, and as someone who wants to preserve the wild landscape that I call home, I am looking to the future to figure out what I can do to ensure its protection as environmental changes continue to occur. As long as I can remember, even if the memories are just flashes from when I was a toddler, my parents have organized canoe races. One event in particular has by far the most impact on the local community and me personally, the “Adirondack Canoe Classic”, or “90 Miler”. As small children my sister, who is two years older, and I would have a babysitter that took us around to various pit stops over the three day event to cheer for my mother while she competed. My mother had a rule for my sister and I that we could not race in the event until strong enough to pull our own weight, so when she agreed to let my sister race at age 10, that became the age at which I could compete as well.…

My previous camping trips I have taken in the past years have been memorable and full of hardship. I consider myself a very outgoing and adventurous person, that is why I go on crazy trips. Canoeing is my preferred way of traveling when touring lakes and rivers such as the Boundary waters and the Flambeau river. Major disadvantage of canoes is that they weigh up to 85 pounds. The weight matters being when crossing land to get to the next lake the canoe goes on your shoulders to carry it.…
