ZAPPOS is an online retailer, whose focus started with shoes, deriving its name from the Spanish word zapatos, which means shoes. They are based out in Las Vegas, Nevada run by CEO Tony Hsieh who has revolutionized his company. Hsieh’s personal background and successes he has been extremely fortunate, although he has worked and earned his way to the top driven through happiness his entire life. At ZAPPOS Tony uses the upside-down pyramid view to structure his organization. This upside-down pyramid is a reversal of traditional management practices. Employees are placed at the top being the main focus of the company followed by the customers next and finally the managers and leaders at the bottom. ZAPPOS serves the company individuals at the top of the pyramid with the upmost respect and luxury. Employees will receive 100% coverage on dental and medical as well as receiving free food lunches and snacks and also provided with a personal life coach. They all go through the same training and complete a call center training class and are provided with everything essentially needed to succeed. There are three essential managerial skills that include technical, human, and conceptual that each have an important roles I throughout the organization. Technical skills are those skills needed to accomplish a specific task. These are the techniques, practices, tools and processes needed by front-line employees. Managers are expected to have higher technical skills than employees so if they need help they have someone who can directly help them.
