Don’t mess with a physical therapist they get paid to hurt people. When a physical therapist say they are going to massage a muscle, it may not feel like the nice relaxing massage people get at the spa. Massage performed in therapy is to decrease tightness and tone and to improve tissue mobility of a specific muscle that may be very inflamed or the source of joint pain. (Liz Hoobchaak¬) The field of physical therapy requires a therapist to be considerate and understanding of a person’s limits. Even though this job does not save lives that are life threating, it is rewarding in knowing that someone might be able to do basic activities again. When addressing the profession of physical therapy, one of the most important aspects of it is the history. In all other counties except the United States physical therapy is known as Physiotherapy. To be outside the United States and ask for a physical therapist people would not know what is being talked about (“The History of Physical Therapy Practice in the United States”). Between the 1800s and the 1950s physical therapy started to develop in wars. Marguerite Sanderson and Mary McMillan were the first two men to work in the “reconstruction aides”, they were responsible for caring for the wounded men in World War I (“History of Physical Therapy”). During the 1920s and 1930s the main modes of treatment were isolation, bed rest, immobilization, and later on surgery.
