Physical therapy is a dynamic and exciting health care profession that helps people with important aspects of the healing process, whether they are in pain and in discomfort due to injury or any other problems that causes lifetime disability. It helps to develop physical fitness and endurance using specific exercises to decrease stress and builds self-esteem in the development of a healthy lifestyle. It involves a professional interaction between physical therapist, physical therapist assistant, patients, other health care providers and patient family members and communities. The facility I choose to observed first is an outpatient clinic called Physical Rehabilitation Network. I called the place to ask them to come for shadowing for 15 hours, the clinical director, Tom Peck, PT asked me to come by with my resume and TB test result . Tom, PT introduced me to his rehab team, which is consist of two receptists, five physical therapists and five rehabilitation aides who worked under the direct supervision of these therapists. They all showed their professionalism and professional behaviour during the patient care. They all were very cooperative and nice to me and are eager to teach me how things work in their clinic. In this setting PT’s were working with a variety of patients' like young children to adults, and as well as elderly, who is involved in some kind of injuries . This clinic has a big gymnasium which is equipped with plinths, bicycle, therapeutic big ball, weights, therabands, stepper ,treadmill, parallel bars ,ultrasound machines and electric stimulation. They also have hot and cold packs and paraffin wax area where they treat their patients.They also have rooms if some patient needs privacy for the treatment …show more content…
During the observation, I noted that because of the increased population of geriatric patients , the PT has to take into consideration about the physical ,cognitive and neurological status of these patients to ensure that dangerous accidents and injuries do not occur during the treatment session. In the skilled nursing facility most of the diagnosis I saw were fall, strokes ,arthritis ,osteoporosis, pain due to cancer ,dementia ,Alzheimer's and incontinence . PT can do better by improving their balance and making them independent by teaching their family ,nursing staff and caregiver how to do transfers, gait training, and balancing that helps to improve their cognitive impairment . Because most of the patients were wheelchair bound and used assistive devices to move around. Physical therapist at the skilled nursing facility follows a standard protocol for physical assessment ,which includes measuring range of motion , muscle force, reflex activity, sensation, soft tissue status , balance and coordination ,and posture. All these will help the physical therapist in doing the assessment , plan and prioritized treatment, identify when the goals were to be met and recognize when there is a need for treatment modification.
