The Pros And Cons Of Ethanol

Improved Essays
In our world today, we use sources of primary energy, and remedies that we are able to cure illness with. Organic compounds make up cells and structures of organisms and carry out life processes, Ethanol is common and is used for many things in our lives. Ethanol has two ways it can be produced the first is by fermentation, which is the chemical breakdown of sugar by yeast, this method is used to create beverages such as alcohol. The second method is the Hydration on ethene. This methobd produces ethanol by reacting ethene with steam. The formula for Ethanol is written as C2H6O or C2H5OH.

Water is made up of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms, the bonds between oxygen and the two hydrogens and the shape of the molecule result in water being of polar nature. The polar section of ethanol is found in the bond of O-H and therefore allows ethanol to dissolve in water as they are both of polar nature. Although ethanol is soluble in water it can be easily separated through the method of distillation, where heating the liquids is required, as ethanol evaporates faster and more readily than water. Water is found to have a boiling point of 100oC, whereas mentioned before, ethanol’s boiling point is at a lower temperature of 78.5oC. The condensation of ethanol can be caught and collected on a cold surface.

Ethanol is found to be very efficient in killing viruses, bacteria and fungi, which therefore makes it a great component in hand sanitizer and medical wipes. The polar nature allows it to disrupt the hydrogen bonding in the proteins and the non-polar nature means ethanol has the ability to dissolve the bi-lipid layer of the cell membranes. The combination of the effects results in the cell content escaping and the bacterium dying. However, against bacterial spores ethanol is

From the results in table1, it is shown that that Pseudomonas aeuruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were both destroyed by of ethanol(70%) at all time set intervals of (1, 2, 5, 10 and 15 minutes). Ethanol has different capabilities as revealed in the lab experiment. . Due to its rapid evaporation nature, ethanol is an intermediate limited level germicide with restricted contact time and limited ability to infiltrate the organic matter. The results from the experiment at 1 and 2 minutes confirm the fast acting characteristic of ethanol as it kills most bacteria in 5…

Because of the molecular nature of each type of bond, it is hypothesized that polar covalent molecules It is hypothesized that the samples which are insoluble in water are likely to be non-polar molecules or network covalent and the samples which dissolve are either ionic or polar molecules to have dissolved in the water.…

Known as the human species oldest recreational drug, Ethanol is a colorless, flammable liquid, with a distinct smell, and burns with a blue flame. It has the chemical formula of CH3CH2OH (it's molecular formula) or C2H6O (it's empirical formula), that can also be abbreviated using chemistry notation as EtOH. It has a melting point at -173.2°F , and a boiling point at 173.1°F. Ethanol has many handy uses around the world, in many different places.…

This will play a key role in designing engines for use with ethanol which will be discussed later. Despite these advantages, Ethanol does have one key disadvantage; that it is not as energy dense as other fuels. As can be seen in the table to the left, the decrease in ethanol content results in increase in energy content. Alternative energy is an issue with implications at the local, national, and international levels.…

Vinegar is biodegradable liquid that consists of about 5-20% acetic acid (CH3COOH), an active ingredient produced from the fermentation of ethanol. An international team of researchers from Venezuela, France, and the US reported that acetic acid can effectively kill mycobacteria, even highly drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis. According to Canada’s National Collaborating Centre for environmental health, the acid in vinegar crosses the cell membrane of bacteria and prompts a release of protons, which causes the cell to…

To start with, look at the effectiveness of Antibacterial Hand Soap, against Bacillus and E.Coli. As it was stated, Bacillus is gram positive with spores and E. Coli is gram negative with no spores. But the hand soap was the most effective towards both. The reason behind this is because it contains the active ingredient Triclosan. Triclosan is a broad spectrum antiseptic that is effective because it blocks the active site of the bacteria so it is not allowed to reproduce and dies.…

After starting with 30 mL of an unknown mixture of two solvents, fractional distillation and gas chromatography were used to identify the unknowns as acetone and toluene in a 1 to 2.04 ratio of acetone to toluene. Fractional distillation was first used to separate the unknown mixture into its components based on boiling point. Distillation refers to the method of separating components of a mixture through heating and cooling. Simple distillation, which is especially useful in the separation of less-volatile substances from volatile substances, such as sugar from water, can be used to separate a liquid-liquid mixture if the boiling points of the component liquids differ by more than 40-50°C. A plot of temperature versus volume for a simple…

The purpose of this lab was to determine the relationships between boiling point and molecular structure. To do this we used four different chemicals, all with the same molecule but just with different subscripts. To preform this experiment, we were required to use a hot plate, water bath, alcohols, ketones, and alkalines, a test tube, capillaries, and a test tube cap. Once the water was boiling, we lowered the test tube into the water and waited until the chemical began to boil. Once the chemical began to boil we removed the test tube from the water bath.…

Ethanol is a renewable fuel with a complete cycle making it reusable. Since the production of ethanol is plant material the glucose inside the plant is synthesised from CO2 and water by photosynthesis, yeast fermentation generates ethanol from glucose (ehow.com). Ethanol is then used as an energy source and combusted which then produced CO2 and water completing the cycle with plants converting the CO2 and water back to glucose (ehow.com). With this cycle making ethanol renewable makes it a good alternative fuel to fossil fuels which are not…

INTRODUCTION The trends in physical properties of organic compounds such as boiling points and melting points can be deducted from their structures, including size (molecular weight, surface area), shape and functional groups. These factors significantly influence the strength of the intermolecular forces of attraction present; and the nature and strength of intermolecular forces determine the variations in boilingpoints of organic compounds. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure equals the external or atmospheric pressure. At this temperature, every molecules of the liquid acquire enough kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular forces attracting them to the other molecules.…

The reason for this is because ethanol has a lower boiling point than water. The density of the fractions increased as the experiment progressed because more water was contained in the distillate of which water is heavier than ethanol. The percent of ethanol decreased as the experiment progressed while the water percentage increased. To increase the purity of the ethanol in the first fraction the temperature should be kept at a constant temperature that boils the ethanol yet does not boil the water. The Temperature at which the mixture began to boil was at 79 oC. This experiment shows how theoretically fractional distillation could work in an industrial setting.…
