Two systematic review articles will be critiqued and compared in this paper. Article A is titled systematic review and meta-analysis of adverse events of low-dose aspirin and clopidogrel in randomized controlled trials authored by Kenneth McQuaid and Loren Laine. Article B is titled platelet function testing in transient ischemic attack and ischemic stroke: a comprehensive systematic review of the literature by Soon Lim, Catherine Coughlan, Stephen Murphy, Israel Cadenas, Joan Montaner, Vincent Thijs, Lars Marquardt and Dominick McCabe.
The study question of article A is to explore the risk of adverse events with the antiplatelet medications such as aspirin and clopidogrel. The framing of the question is clear, unambiguous and structured. This paper focuses on defining the risk of bleeding events and other noncardiovascular adverse reactions with commonly used antiplatelet agents through a systematic review. The search keywords are aspirin, meta-analysis, systematic review, cardiovascular diseases and platelet aggregation inhibitors. The evidence was selected based on searching using medication names such as clopidogrel or aspirin, and the publication type was randomized controlled trials. This strategy yielded 2835 references including figure, diagram, and chart. The publication dates range back from the year 1966 to December of 2004. The authors did not identify unpublished data from pharmaceutical companies, other funding sources, or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Language or country did not limit the search criteria.
