In my initial phase of volunteering at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, I spent 24 hours learning to professionally transport and communicate with patients. Following training, I commenced my role as a hands-on-care volunteer at DFCI. I currently provide cancer patients with hand massage as they undergo their infusion. IVs are often placed in various regions of the hand so I learn to adapt to differing circumstances to maximize the care and relaxation each patient receives.…

Kezar article took a historical view of the past 30 years in higher education and how summer bridge programs have changed over the years. I enjoyed reading the establishment of summer bridge programs to aid underrepresented minority groups entering college through introduction to college course. The article focuses on growing student populations that include international students, non-English speakers and disabled students, and others who need help in gaining an equal footing with other students. Though the article does not focus on the student population I would like to work with in the near future of first generation college student it does go into detail on effective activities that can be applicable to fit the need of my student population. Some of the wide range of actives summer programs offer includes: academic support, study skills, career counseling, parent involvement, developing relationships on campus, computer literacy, and partnerships with business, communities, and K-12 educators.…

A few months ago, I had a very candid conversation with my dad. He sat me down and we talked about my future, my plans for college and beyond and how he can help me achieve those goals. My plan for the time being was to get my generals done here at LSC and hopefully by then know what I want to do for a career so I can choose a college and a degree that suites me. After that my father expected a very familiar tale. The one where you get a job you love, a family you love more, to retire early and travel often.…

I want to work with at-risk youth because I believe it's essential to support and help children while they are young to have a positive outlook on life and hope it will prevent them from engaging in some form of criminal activity. I also believe that children who have some form of adults' guidance in their lives are less likely to be involved in criminal activities. I believe I would be a good candidate for this position because I have had experience in this field of work. Both of my parents have work 20+ years in the criminal justice and social work fields, so I have seen firsthand the effect an authority figure can have on a child's life. As I explained earlier, children just need some guidance from a supportive figure to change their lives.…
