Rhetorical Analysis Of Nathan's 'Find Your Greatness'

Superior Essays
What is greatness? Many would think of greatness to be someone or something extraordinary. But the reality is that anyone and everyone is capable of being great. Nobody would believe and understand this better than Nathan Sorrell. Nathan was the star of one of Nike’s “Find Your Greatness” commercials, which was published in July of 2012 by the Wieden + Kennedy Portland Agency. Nathan was 12 years old when this commercial was released. He also weighed over 200 pounds, which is what made him the perfect person for this genre of commercial. Nathan was so inspired to change his ways after the commercial was made that he lost over 30 pounds. This is what makes the commercial so special. If it inspired him to be great, it must have inspired hundreds …show more content…
The commercial is essentially all logos based on the fact the goal of it is to persuade the viewers to use Nike gear, to achieve “greatness”. Even though the narrator never mentions Nike, it gets the point across that their products can make anyone great, not just famous athletes. The first words said in the commercial are: “Greatness, it’s just something we made up. Somehow we’ve come to believe that greatness is a gift, reserved for a chosen few.”(0:09-0:21) What he is saying is that society expects only certain people to be “great”, but the reality is that anyone can be great. But he also says: “The rest of us can only stand by watching; you can forget that. Greatness is not some rare DNA strand, it’s not some precious thing. Greatness is no more unique to us than breathing. We’re all capable of it; all of us.”(0:30-0:55) What the narrator is saying here, is that people think that normal people can never compare to the famous athletes, but those people are wrong. Greatness is not something that is hard to come by, it is not something that should be taken for granted because it is not something that is given out to few people. It is saying that anyone can achieve greatness by using Nike, and only Nike. But what is interesting is that Nike is never promoted until the very last seconds of the …show more content…
The ethos is not as obvious as the logos that is involved. When one first sees the ad, they may ask themselves why someone like Nathan is starring in a Nike commercial. Nike is an athletic brand after all; so why is there not a famous athlete in it? The point of the commercial is not to promote Nike’s products with someone who is already great in the eyes of society because people already know who they are and what they do. In this case, nobody knows who Nathan is. All the viewers see is an overweight child running down the middle of the street; but then the narrator starts talking. After he is done narrating, the point of the commercial becomes much clearer; it is not only athletes that are able to use Nike and be great doing it, someone like Nathan can do it

Three things come to mind when one thinks of Nike: the three lettered quote “Just Do It” stamped in bright yellow across their t-shirts, the simple yet very recognizable swoosh symbol, and the fact that the multi billion-dollar brand advertises and represents all of the latest and greatest athletes. Phil Knight, the co-founder of Nike, is behind all of this publicity and fame that we see almost everywhere. Believed to be the 20th century version of John D. Rockefeller, Knight’s actions can easily be compared and contrasted to the capitalist techniques of that infamous Robber Baron. These two men shared very similar characteristics that included: ambition, risk taking, and greed. No matter if it is shoes or oil, achieving success in any industry…
