Founder and CEO, Sheldon G. Adelson and his partners founded the computer trade show, ‘COMDEX’ in 1979. Ten years later, he had made enough money to buy the famous Sands Hotel and opened up a Sands Expo and Convention Center across from it. They then sold COMDEX in 1995 for over 800 million dollars in order to focus on developing the Sands properties and name. After a trip to Italy and some inspiration from his wife, Adelson decided that his goal was to combine the romantic atmosphere of somewhere exotic like Venice, and pair it with all the modern luxuries that only Las Vegas could offer. ‘Our global corporate citizenship program, Sands Cares, integrates our philanthropic work worldwide through financial giving and volunteerism. The ultimate goal for Sands Cares is to build on our company’s legacy of making an impact in the communities we call home and the planet we share’. Although their values are stated very clearly, I cannot know for certain how strictly they honor them. It is very apparent that these philanthropic events and donations are highly publicized, but I don’t know if those events are an accurate representation of the company’s actual intentions. For example, on the website, there are many photos of what looks like staff members who are volunteering in the community. After digging a bit deeper I found that, for the most part, the company is not doing the volunteering, but creating programs and advertising the events in order to strike interest in other members of the community to volunteer with those specific programs. However, the owner makes significant donations to many different types of philanthropic organizations. So although the company boasts many donations of both time and money, it seems that the financial contributions are much more
