Regarding Henry is an excellent example demonstrating humans Id and Superego states of mind. The movie takes place in New York City. The main character, Henry is a wealthy lawyer, however tends to be arrogant and greedy. Freud's theories stated that humans have 3 parts to their personality, sId, ego, and superego. Regarding Henry shows focuses on the Id, and Superego part of the brain overall.
In Regarding Henry most of the Superego scenes occur in the beginning of the story line. Freud says it is the moral standards our personality has. Henry, as a lawyer is a very strict based person. He really show no emotion towards his daughter, his Superego part of his brain shuts those feelings down he may need to have. Henry also did not pay attention to his wife, he made a good lawyer because he did not show emotion. I believe his natural state is Supergo because he was very intelligent and mature before the accident that happened later on on the story lineline. This Id mind really took part in this scene because he couldn't really control what he was doing. The Id according to Freud is the childish side of your mind. In the scene where rachel spills her drink, he said he does that all the time and spilled his drink purposely without thinking. After he did that he didn't know it was wrong. Another scene is when he goes through his draws and takes his saved money, then goes on the street and buys a dog. He didn't even think about all the care getting a dog would need. He just decided he wanted a dog and bought it with the money he wasn't supposed to use. The Id is shown very strongly after the accident because everything Henry does he can't really control and does it without thinking. But, towards the end he starts to regains his thought and his superego starts the reaper. The superego does not come back fully but he starts to think more
