The collective unconscious is defined as the deepest layer of the unconscious mind in which we all share as human beings. Because of this collective unconscious, all of humanity share archetypes that serve as original forms or prototypes. The different aspects of our lives are said to have been modeled after these original forms or ideas. One archetype that relates to the Batman universe is the archetype the persona. According to Jung, the persona represents the public mask that we all wear in front of society or is our social mask. Bruce Wayne wears the social mask of Batman and the Bruce Wayne that the public knows. Wearing the Batman mask allows Bruce to fight justice without having to compromise who he really is due to him being a public figure. At the same time, his public persona allows him to protect his loved ones by not associating Batman with his public self in order to protect his loved ones from his enemies. Another example of a Jungian archetype is the shadow. The shadow represents the secret urges or thoughts within our unconscious or id. It represents the sides to us that we want to hide from others because it makes us weak as humans or it brings out a side of us that is not favorable.
