Raising Minimum Wage

In terms of the issue of minimum wage, I, Lisa Murkowski believe that the minimum wage should not increase. Therefore, I am not in favor of The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2015 (H.R. 2015/ S. 2015), which will increase the minimum wage to $10.10. However, in cases where the federal minimum wage does not increase a lot, I am in favor of it. On the other hand, in terms of the issue of guns, I am opposed to The Secure Communities Act of 2015 (H.R. 1547/ S. 1547).
What this law will do is require criminal background checks for all online gun purchases and for all firearm purchases at gun shows. It will not require background checks for gun purchases or gun transfers between family members or neighbors. It will also prohibit the sale or possession

Raising minimum wage can be an issue where it would lead to unemployment. In the reading, Increasing the Minimum Wage: Pros & Cons, by Sarah Shemkus, it states, “A higher minimum wage, they claim, would be too heavy a burden on employers, especially small business owners. And those employers, in turn, would be unable to hire as many people -- an undesirable result when unemployment continues to hover at about 8 percent.” In other words, if minimum wage were to increase, many business owners would end up not being able to hire as many people and to ensure that everyone is employed, minimum wage in my opinion should not increase. I am also opposed to raising the minimum wage because this would mean that prices would increase. In the article, Winners and Losers of Federal and State Minimum Wages, it states, “Their research shows that while 1 in 4 of the poorest workers gain from an increase in the minimum wage, 3 in 4 of the poorest workers lose from shouldering the costs of higher prices resulting from the wage increase.” Since many business owners rely on the money that they make to pay their employees, increasing the minimum wage would mean that the product we buy would be much more (supply and demand). With products that we need being much more expensive, this does not help low income families financially. It would in fact put them right back to the situation that they were already at without the increase of minimum …show more content…
I voted against the Background Checks for all Firearm Purchases because I believe that people should be able to buy guns in stores and online without being subjected to a background check. I once stated, “Alaskans living off the road system, in rural villages without gun stores, who order guns over the Internet. To pick up the gun, they would have to buy a ticket to the nearest town with a gun dealer. Whoever you're purchasing from the Internet has to send the gun directly to the dealer ... it doesn't come to you, it goes to whoever is doing your background check." To put it in another way, instead of getting the gun shipped to your house when you order it online, you will have to go through a whole process of doing a background check from the dealer. After that is done, you will have the gun handed to you. However, what I am trying to say about this process of a background check is that it can be very inconvenient for Alaskans who might need a gun for hunting. Our citizens would also be negatively affected by the passage of this bill. There aren’t gun stores everywhere in which people can purchase guns and as a result, people should be able to purchase guns online without background checks. I also voted against the bills Limits Firearm Magazine Capacity and Establishes Regulations for Assault Weapons because according to the Department of Justice, there was no evidence proving that limiting firearm magazine capacity

“Background checks identify individuals who are ineligible to purchase firearms and prevent those persons from obtaining them, making them a key element in preventing tragic and unnecessary gun deaths in the United States” (“Background Check Procedures”). When a citizen decides to purchase a gun from any federally licensed firearms dealer, they will enter the customer’s name and information into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. “Raising the minimum wage would not help . . . it would have the opposite effect because it would victimize the country’s lowest-skilled workers and make it more difficult for them to find employment” (Reisman, 2015). Raising the federal minimum wage will increase unemployment and at the same time increase the cost products and services. Per Thomas MaCurdy, professor of economics at Stanford University, “higher minimum wages help almost nobody; but raise prices for everyone” (MaCurdy, 2015). If the federal government desires to raise the standard of living in our country, “the best thing the [government] could do is to just get out of the way” (Epstein,…

Lower-income families may affected the most from an increase in the minimum wage because businesses faced with higher labor costs may be forced to raise prices. The Employment Policies Institute estimates that a small business with 25 minimum-wage workers would see costs rise by $57,389 in two years under the president's proposal. Most fast-food outlets operate on margins of less than 5 percent.increasing the minimum wage would lead to inflation because the cost of goods and services rises as well so the value of the dollar diminishes as you do so. Another way minimum wage increases might be absorbed is through changes in prices. Specifically, employers facing a higher mandated minimum wage might choose, if possible, to pass on the extra costs of labor to the consumers through higher prices.…
