Around 5% of Australia teenagers are openly gay and around 1 in 15 people in their 20’s identify as homosexuals hence the demand for equality in Australia is becoming a larger issue that ever following the US’ decision to legalise same-sex marriage. Many homosexual people are just like the rest of the population, they are employed, seeking medical advice for reproduction and other things society deems ‘normal’. The only aspect that changes when analysing a person who has a ‘different’ sexual orientation is they prefer the same sex when looking for a sexual or romantic relationship. How come we discriminate over such a senseless topic? These people face many difficulties; beginning with homophobia, mental & physical abuse and not to mention exclusion from a large pillar of society; our health system. A person who is in a same-sex relationship does not have the same visiting rights as a person in heterosexual relationship. They are also vastly excluded from many adoption agencies and IVF programs which means they do not have the simple human right of starting a family which immensely impacts a lot of the Australian
