Touchy Self Analysis

On November 15th 2016, I refrained from being my usual touchy self and examined how my grandparents and twin sister reached. I was not sure if they would notice any difference, but to my surprise, they noticed my change in behavior more than I expected which left me feeling bad. As expressed by Hertenstein, “touch serves many functions and conveys many messages,” specifically touch communicates closeness and warmth between individuals (Knapp, Hall, & Horgan, 2014, p. 231). I personally am a very warm individual and I show my connection with others through touch, especially with family members. Since I often touch my family members before conducting this experiment and even throughout it I kept asking myself how my family is going to feel about my change in behavior. As well as, are they even going to realize that I am refraining from my normal touchy self? Essentially, …show more content…
I had no idea that my family would take me not touching them so personally and believe that they did something to upset me. This experiment made me realize that touching is an important concept that shows closeness between others. My family was able to see a difference in me and our relationship with just one day of me acting out of the normal. Moreover, I believe that touch is imperative in order for relationships to be strong, specifically positive touch. According to the textbook Nonverbal Communication in Human Interaction, “positive touch may involve support, reassurance, appreciation, affection, and sexual attraction, or, if touch is sustained, it may send a message of inclusion” (Knapp, Hall, & Horgan, 2014, p. 241). Positive touch lets others know that you care about them and want to be close to them. It is crucial to touch others whenever it seems appropriate and to refrain from touching when told so. In all, I believe that touching is crucial because actions speak louder than words and touching others shows one’s true love for

This section includes verbal language as well as nonverbal physical language. My mother and I share the same primary language, English. She is also moderately fluent in Spanish in order to communicate with Hispanic parents and students that do not know English. We have the same opinions when it comes to strangers touching us, but do not mind friends and family being in close proximity. We both have a high-context speech pattern which implies high uses of nonverbal elements and communication is seen as a way of engaging with…

After many years of my parents being together, their love languages began to fade more and more. What I saw missing the most in my parents relationship was that they did not show their love physically. In the writings of “Understanding The Five Love Languages,”, the author Gary Chapman explains how marriages should constantly build love by stating “ In marriage, the love language of physical touch includes everything from putting a hand on your mate's shoulder as you walk by, touching his or her leg as you're driving together, and holding hands while you're walking to kissing, embracing and sexual intercourse.” I feel that my parents should be participating in these kind of actions because it could help lead to a healthier marriage for us…

“These strategies and rules influence our interactions with others. We generally structure our interactions with others to conform with the family’s boundary rules”(Anderson and Sabatelli 2010:25). We learn how to act and what our boundaries are first with our family, and then apply those same rules with others. It is always important to not be too open but not be too closed off as well. If a family is too open, the members will not know who is family and who is not.…

Participants in contact were likely to experience “attitude strength,” “outgroup trust,” and “forgiveness” as well as reducing implicit bias and “automatic physiological threat responses to out-group members” (Hewstone & Swart, 2011, 376). Contact can change these fundamental attributes of one’s character and self. Additionally, those who participated in intergroup contact gain positive attitudes not only toward the outgroup they interacted with, but also “towards other, secondary, outgroups not involved in the contact situation” (Hewstone & Swart, 2011, p. 376). The effects of contact bleed through to other parts of one’s personal life, creating a fundamental change in a participant’s…

Touch is used as a sense to interpret a clear meaning, for instance when someone is in mourning and you gently touch them on their shoulder to convey a sense of closure towards them. Haptics is used in this movie when Regina brushes Aaron’s hair in order to show her affection for him whilst also trying to make Cady jealous. Another example of haptics is portrayed in this movie when Regina held Aaron’s jaw when she was about to kiss him in front of Cady at the Halloween party which depicted Regina’s feelings towards Aaron. During the Halloween party when Janice and Damian were watching a horror film and Cady unexpectedly walked in, Janice and Damian got a huge freight and the results thereof was them holding each other tightly as they were both seeking shelter and protection from each other. When Regina sent Gretchen to talk to Cady, in the school’s hallway on her behalf, Gretchen hugged Cady and said that it was from Regina and that showed the intimacy of their friendship and how they showed each other affection through the usage of…

No matter what the interaction is or how often they occur, everyone builds a relationship with the people they encounter. When it comes to police officers and those who work in law enforcement this is especially true due to the fact that their entire jobs revolve around being involved with the public since it is their jobs to protect the citizens in their community. A statement that speaks to the extent of how far up and down the ranks of law enforcement their relationship with those that they serve goes is one that states “police/community relations is the job of every officer and not just the person conferred with that title”. This statement means that whether a person carriers the title of officer, is the sheriff or chief of police, a detective,…
