It controls and coordinates actions and reactions, allows us to think and feel, and enables us to have memories and feelings – all the things that make us human.” ("Brain Anatomy." Brain Anatomy. 2003-2015 Princeton Brain & Spine Care) Therefore to function and think properly we must be mentally healthy. Mental health strengthens and supports our ability to; have healthy relationships, make good life choices, maintain physical health and well being, handle the natural ups and downs of life, and discover and grow to our full potential. However in the United States about one in four adults over the age of 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. (Mental Disorders in America. …show more content…
A technique to unwind and detach from the demanding needs of live involves practicing mindfulness, or different meditation techniques. Using these techniques we are able to calm the mind and body producing positive thoughts, behaviors, and feelings thus improving both mental and psychical health. Studies have shown that practicing mindfulness or meditation even for just a few weeks can bring a variety of physical, psychological, and social benefits. Some of the things mindfulness and meditation have proven to benefit include boosting the immune system, increasing positive emotions while decreasing negative emotions such as depressing, stress, and anxiety, helping us to focus, improve our memory and attention skills, foster compassion, and enhancing relationships. More notably meditation has been effective in changing and shaping our brains. These benefits show meditation to be an effective healing technique for psychological …show more content…
This observation may support reports that meditation training develops the ability of keeping attention to execute a task with less interference from distracters. Moreover, meditation could also have an effect of reducing the necessity of impulse control. MRI scans have provided data concluding regular meditators activate fewer brain regions than non-meditators in order to achieve the same performance during an attention task.
