Housekeeping may have a different meaning for each person who hears it. For some people, it is closely connected with their childhood memories. Yet for many, housekeeping is a domestic chore. It means doing something you have to do, when there is so much more you'd rather do. However housekeeping is much more than this.
Wikipedia defines Housekeeping as the management of duties and chores involved in the running of a household, such as, cooking, home maintenance, shopping and bill pay. The term is also used to refer to the money allocated for such use. While a housekeeper as a person employed to manage a household, and the domestic staff. This could be the explanation for the appearance of a new word “hotel”.
Nowadays hotel is a specific organization, offering a wide range of services to public. Needless to say that it could only be achieved by joint work of all integrated departments. Housekeeping has always been one of the major components in the the consistent and coordinated work of the hotels.
In this essay I’ll attempt to prove the above statement.
It is a well known fact that the staff of Housekeeping Department is greater than that of any other Department of the hotel. Almost half of the total personnell of the hotel is engaged in housekeeping. In most hotels the Housekeeping Department is headed by an Executive Housekeeper who coordinates the work of maids, floor attendants, supervisors and other staff. Among his responsibilities is also the planning of the Department expenses and provision of financial reports to the hotel Accounting Department .
The supervisors control the work of housekeers, check the condition of hotel lodgings and order the repair work if needed.

Interactions with other departments are obligatory for a good team work in a hotel. Any communication problems such as misunderstanding can lead to the delays and mistakes in the work of different departments which can cause a big chaos. That is why some hotels or hotel chains provide their employees with a simple list of rules to follow in order to avoid any communicational problems which later could affect the working process. According to Kappa, Nitschke and Schappert, teamwork of Housekeeping Department and the Front Office is essential for daily hotel operations; and the most successful hotels would say that they have accomplished it by establishing excellent communication procedures. For example, the cycle of communication begins when the front desk provides housekeeping department with the night clerk’s room report and after that housekeeping must provide the front desk with a listing of rooms that are ready for occupancy (Cassado). But communications with other departments are no less important. Two of the largest devisions which are known as a revenue-generating centers Room and Food and Beverage Devisions play essential roles in providing all services that guests expect during their stay.
