Such strengths would be my use and understanding of both verbal and nonverbal communication. For my career, I spend most of my day communicating with school faculty, parents, students, and my employees. I pride myself in speaking well and using the appropriate tones, language, and timing when speaking to various individuals. I also try and focus on nonverbal communication, not just that of my own, but of others that are having conversations with me. After reflecting and reviewing the course work, an area that I know I can improve on is listening. According to Bevan and Sole (2014), listening is one of the most neglected interpersonal communication skills (Section 7.2, para. 12). I am very stubborn when it comes to debating and communicating my opinions with someone who has different views then me. I tend to not be open-minded, get distracted easily, interrupt others and interject, and often times forget to respond or respond appropriately. All of these things and more are part of what Bevan and Sole (2014) identity as the six distinct components of effective listening. In order to be a more competent communicator, I will need to focus on improving my listening skills for growth in both my personal and professional lives. These things will all help in my becoming a more caring and attentive brother, uncle, son, and a more effective boss and

    1. Before watching this Ted Talk video, I did think I was a some what, decent listener. I believed this because during conversations, I always liked to truly understand what the other person is trying to communicate to me before I answer back or giving a reply -- which led me to believing I was a good listener. After watching it, I realized, and also am surprised, that my listening skills do need some revamping because I know I do not ever take some time to sit in silence and would never think this is a way to better your listening skills. I believe my listening skills impact my communication skills because many times I focus too much on how a message is being sent (tone) vs. what the message being sent is trying to communicate.…

One key learning experience I have had in this goal of improving my active listening skills which has aided in developing my professional skills in the workplace, would have been when we had our first team meeting, where I was introduced and where we discussed what needed to be completed for the week ahead. Being new to the team meetings, I was ignorant around what things need my upmost attention in terms of listening and concentrating on the finer details. I found that ideas and tasks were thrown around rather fast and it was hard to keep up. That week I found particularly hard as I was not confident in asking lots of questions and could not remember all the details and tasks planned for the week. This made others frustrated when I did eventually…
