Favelas started because of the independence of slaves in 1888. The former slaves then moved near big cities and create small neighborhoods, called Favelas. They had to make their own houses on free land because they did not have any money. In the 1950’s a large influx of farmers moved to the big cities because they were not satisfied with the amount of money, which increased the size and population of the Favelas. This influx of population caused the Favelas to create their own economy and Favelas started to thrive when Brazil’s government change from an empire to a republic because of a lack of political and economical stability, which caused more people to lose jobs which forced more people into the Favelas. …show more content…
One of the policies they created was Parque Proletário. This relocated people in the Favelas to public housing units. Favela Removal Program was a programed that removed Favelas by moving the people then demolishing the buildings. Favela-Bairro was a programed that was created to help the people in the Favelas. Favela-Bairro was to improve the living standards in Favelas. Operação Rio was to try to regain control of the Favelas from gangs. Brazil's government was still a military regime but it had learned from the Favela Removal Program. It learned that no matter what you do Favelas will still pop up in other locations. So they tried to instead hide the realities of the Favelas by making them look nicer. What it did was it created more amenities near Favelas like stores and parks and connected Favelas to the other parts of town with roads. This made it so a person in a Favela could travel across town to go to work. This open the job opportunities for people in Favelas because they could travel across town. This had multiple effects because it helped grow the economy because of the influx of workers, but it also lead to a lot of worker exploitation where they don’t pay the worker because they think that since the workers are from Favelas they can get away with not paying them. They also thought that the could pay them very little money because they are from Favelas. The Favela-Bairro helped build back the relationship between the residents of the Favelas and the government. But at the same time it lowered the relationship with the upper class and the government because the upper class thinks that Favela-Bairro will increase crime rates. Favela-Bairro help lower the tension between the residents of the Favelas and the government. But with everything that increased the relationship
