Guided Reading Procedure: Direct Instruction

Constructivsim in reading theory requires that students, at any age, be actively engaged in determining their own purpose and constructing their own meaning . The reader is fully integrated using higher order thinking skills and solves practical problems that are real-world and relevant. The teacher acts as a facilitator to to encourage student questions and interpretations without expectation of one correct answer. Online learning can be an example. Students are emphasizing multiple perspectives of their reading with practical, real world learning within a social context. Facilitators and students emphasize multiple modes of learning with students deriving self-awareness as they move through the process.

The teacher chooses a passage of specific length. (S)he prepares by assessing background knowledge, vocabulary and concepts. Students read and then brainstorm with the book closed. Teacher leads factstorming process to collect information. Students will reread the passage with motivation to correct the fellow students' errors. The teacher leads a discussion to correct the errors. The information can be categorized or put into outline form and later tested on the …show more content…
Guides are created by the teacher to allow the students to practice comparing or contrasting material. The teacher finds the pattern and the major concepts of the topic and then designs the pattern guide. Students may need to begin with guides partially completed and eventually transition to completing their own. The goal is to instruct students to find patterns in reading material.
3+ Level Guides are teacher created statements that are designed to integrate three levels of comprehension. True and false statements are created by the teacher to allow students to connect to the material in a literal, inferential and real world application. The teacher uses the text to create five to six statements that are factual, then another five to six statements that use inferential thinking with the third level consisting of higher order thinking. Students apply the statements to the topic they are learning
