With the Clinical Educator’s discretion, S’niya was assigned to complete a third-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment, and a fourth-grade phonics and vocabulary assessment. Based on past test scores, the teacher speculated that was a possibility that S’niya was not working on par with her grade level. There for, the purpose of the third grade and fourth assessments was to form a better idea of if S’niya was truly falling behind in her reading skills or not.

Unlike the third-grade assessment that contained skills on the lower level of the grade, the fourth-grade questions were written at a fourth-grade level. We began with the phonics assessment first. Unluckily, S’niya started off already answering the first two questions wrong. One of the questions was “Most of the farmers here grow corn, soybeans, and ____” to which she answered “greet” instead of “wheat”. By the end of the assessment, S’niya answered five out of the ten questions correct, with a percent of 50%. While 50% is once again considered below grade level, the result was shocking, in my opinion. Reason being, S’niya barely passed the phonics section of the third grade, so I was expecting her to barely answer any questions correctly for the fourth-grade assessment.
